Energy Saving Tips
Quick and easy changes to make around the home, to improve comfort and reduce your energy bills.
Combine tips to result in higher savings across the year.
Turn your thermostat down
For every degree you reduce the temperature on your thermostat, you could reduce your heating bill by 10%. It is recommended that you have the temperature between 18 - 21°C.
Switch off your appliances
Turning your appliances off at the wall rather than leaving them on standby when you are not using them could save approximately £55 a year which amounts to 195 kWh a year.
Fit a tap aerator
A tap aerator reduces the amount of water flowing out of the tap without affecting how it washes or rinses. This simple change can save you an average of £20 a year. Contact your water provider to see if they have any available for free.
Avoid using your tumble dryer
By letting your washing dry naturally on racks inside or outside on warmer days, you could save an average of £60 a year.
Turn lights off
By turning lights off when they are not needed, you could save approximately £20 a year which is an average of 80 kWh a year.

Don’t overfill the kettle
By only filling the kettle with the amount of water you need over a year, you will save an average of 40 kWh. This amounts to a saving of approximately £10 a year.
Energy saving light bulbs
Lighting makes up 11% of the average UK household electricity consumption. Switching 50 watt halogen bulbs to LEDs (Light emitting diodes) could save up to £4 per bulb per year.
(Based on 750-lumen bulb running for 521 hours per year.)
Wash clothes at 30 degrees
If you set your washing machine to wash clothes at 30 degrees rather than a higher temperature, you could save an average of £24 a year. Many washing machines have an ECO mode that will do this for you.
Figures are taken from Energy Saving Trust and are based on fuel prices as of April 2025. Estimates are based on an insulated, three-bed, semi-detached, gas-heated home.
