Mrs S lives in a 3-bedroom house in Netherfield, Nottinghamshire with her partner and 93 year-old mother - both of whom are elderly with health and mobility conditions. Due to her household eligibility, Mrs S received Solar Panels as part of the Green Grants Scheme. Nicola, a Project Support Officer (PSO) at NEP, directed Mrs S to further streams of support that could lower her household energy bill and ensure they are living in a warm and comfortable home.

Boiler Optimisation

‘Let’s Optimise your Heating’ is a scheme fulfilled by NEP and funded by Nottinghamshire County Council, offering free home visits to Nottinghamshire residents to help their boilers run more efficiently. This involves turning the flow temperature down to at least 60°C, whilst keeping homes warm and comfortable.

Reducing the flow temperature reduces gas consumption and therefore maximises the efficiency of gas combi-condensing boilers. This reduces the household’s demand for gas and thereby helps to get homes ready for low-carbon heating.

Mrs S said, ‘I’m a cold person so our bills have always been high and now my mum is with us on blood thinning tablets - we both feel the cold’. Boiler optimisation was the ideal next step in lowering their gas bill whilst ensuring they felt healthy, warm and comfortable.

Technical Officer Nicola optimised Mrs S’s combi boiler by lowering the flow temperature from 75°C to 60°C. The previous temperature was just below the factory settings and was running too high for optimum efficiency.

The changes make an annual saving of £177 on Mrs S’s gas bill, whilst keeping her home just as warm and comfortable. Mrs S told us “A lovely lady came to complete the boiler optimisation appointment, she showed us how it worked and was very comprehensive in her knowledge. She showed us how to change the temperature back if we need to and explained the savings to us.”

She continued, “Without the information we wouldn’t have been able to have any of these things done, we feel really supported.”

The home visit not only left Mrs S’s boiler running more efficiently but also left her with a better understanding of her boiler controls and how to optimise her heating going forwards.

“All members of staff that I dealt with have been friendly, professional, and knowledgeable.”
