Boiler Upgrade Scheme
£7,500 Grant to Upgrade your Heating System
The UK Government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) could give you a £7,500 grant towards a new heat pump, helping make the switch to low-carbon heating more affordable.
With the grant, the cost of installing a heat pump could be similar to the cost of replacing a gas boiler, giving you a more affordable way to upgrade your home heating while reducing your carbon emissions.
NEP’s Home Energy Advice Team can support you with making your application for the grant. Interested? Fill in a form here.
What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a government scheme that helps homeowners in England and Wales reduce the upfront cost of installing a low-carbon heating system.
If you’re replacing an existing fossil fuel heating system, such as a gas, oil or LPG boiler, you could be eligible for a grant towards the cost of a heat pump or, in some circumstances, a biomass boiler.
How much could you get?
Depending on your property, existing heating system and the low carbon technology you choose, you could receive:
£7,500 towards an air source heat pump
£7,500 towards a water source heat pump
£7,500 towards a ground source heat pump
£2,500 towards an air to air heat pump
£5,000 towards a biomass boiler*
*Property must have no mains gas connection and located in a rural area. The biomass boiler must have an emissions certificate showing that pollution emissions are kept to a minimum.
£9,000 funding for off-gas grid properties (July 2026 - March 2027)
If you heat your home with oil or LPG, you could get a £9,000 grant for air source or ground source heat pumps.
How does the Boiler Upgrade Scheme work?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme can help reduce the cost of replacing a fossil fuel heating system with an eligible low-carbon alternative. To get started, contact us and we can put you in touch with a local MCS-certified installer, or you can speak to an MCS-certified installer directly for a quote.
Once you’ve agreed the installation, your chosen installer will apply to Ofgem for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. If approved, the grant is paid directly to the installer, reducing your overall installation cost, while they manage the application process for you.
Who can apply?
The scheme is available to homeowners, landlords and small business property owners in England and Wales, subject to eligibility criteria, including having a valid EPC and replacing an eligible fossil fuel heating system such as oil, gas, electric or LPG.
Case Study - Referral to Install
A resident looking to replace an old boiler with a low carbon alternative was referred through our service to a trusted installer, Henman Dunn, and advised on available grant funding.
The referral helped them save £7,500 on a £15,000 installation. They said “the companies recommended impressed me as being highly competent” and said they were very happy with the final result.
A great example of how our referral service can help residents access trusted support and save money on low carbon home improvements.
