Energy Cost Comparison

Different energy sources are measured in different units: kWh, therms, BTU, cubic metres, litres and more. This makes it very difficult to compare the actual costs for powering a heating system between different energy sources.

In order to make a fair comparison we need standardised units to determine costs. We have made these calculations for the main fuel types. In making these calculations, sources of data and assumptions have been used and referenced. We try our best to update this information monthly, and have been doing so regularly since 2007. We don’t have any sponsors.

Average prices shown are based on the supply of fuel for a medium-sized domestic property (around 12,500 kWh of annual heat demand per year). Quotes are taken from suppliers within the East Midlands region.

Never miss another update! Provide us with your details and we’ll send you an alert email when next month’s data is available to view.

Smokeless fuel and coal: Based on average prices from House Fuels, Coals2U and Coal Merchant. We have used the CO2eq factor of coal, as the components of smokeless fuels are coal-based and there is currently no specific GHG conversion factor for this.

GSHP (Ground Source Heat Pump) and ASHP (Air Source Heat Pump): Based on best electricity price taken from electric online rate. The boiler efficiency used in the calculation is based on the best available information from Review of Technical Information on Renewable Heat Technologies Report 2011.

*C02e emissions are based on UK Government GHG Conversion Factors for Company Reporting. The CO2e emissions factors used encompass Scopes 1,2 and 3. Scope 1 and 3 are for all fuel types except electricity which uses Scopes 2 and 3. The Scope 3 emissions include emissions associated with extraction, refining and transportation of primary fuels prior to combustion/use in electricity generation; and emissions from Transmission and Distribution.
