Mr B lives in a 3-bedroom house in Worksop, Nottinghamshire with his wife and their four children. Dealing with diabetes, respiratory problems and asthma, a Safeguarding Officer referred Mr B to Nottingham Energy Partnership so that we could help him manage his household outgoings and wellbeing. In April 2022, NEP signposted Mr B to Bassetlaw food bank and signed him up to National Grid’s Priority Service Register. Additionally, in January 2023, Project Support Officer (PSO) Nicola reached out to Mr B about the Let’s Optimise your Heating scheme, explaining that it would help to lower his outgoing bills

Boiler Optimisation

‘Let’s Optimise your Heating’ is a scheme fulfilled by NEP and funded by Nottinghamshire County Council, offering free home visits to Nottinghamshire residents to help their boilers run more efficiently. This involves turning the flow temperature down to at least 60°C, whilst keeping homes warm and comfortable.

Reducing the flow temperature lowers gas consumption, maximising the efficiency of gas combi condensing boilers and minimising the household gas demand. Nicola explained that this would make significant savings on Mr B’s gas bill. He proceeded to book the home visit, telling us

“myself and my wife have illnesses, so we needed help.”

Nicola dropped by Mr B’s home and lowered the boiler’s flow temperature from the very steep number of 80°C to the more efficient figure of 55°C.

Nicola demonstrated this simple and effective change and explained that it would save £236 on their annual gas bills.

Mr B told us -

“I was concerned about my energy bills going up, costs are going up all the time and I have very little money for gas and electric.”

By demonstrating the process, Nicola gave Mr B a better understanding of his boiler and helped him cut important costs going forward. He concluded,

“The home visit was beneficial to me. It was very good, and nothing could have been better.”
