Small Scale Combined Heat & Power (CHP)

CHP is the cogeneration of heat and electricity. On a small scale, a natural gas powered boiler provides the hot water and heating like an existing system, but also produces some electricity to supplement what you buy from the national grid.

CHP is the cogeneration of heat and electricity. On a small scale, a natural gas powered boiler provides the hot water and heating like an existing system, but also produces some electricity to supplement what you buy from the national grid. It is through this offset electricity that the carbon cuts are made.

While large scale CHP is an established technology, small scale CHP is based on relatively new technology. CHP is often grouped together with other renewable technologies because it has the potential to reduce emissions, but in fact it is just a type of efficient boiler, usually still powered by fossil fuels.
