Renewable Energy

If you are looking to install a renewable energy technology, for domestic or commercial use, it is a good idea to find out as much as possible about the technology first.

Nottingham Energy Partnership (NEP) is an independent, impartial group promoting renewable energy technologies in the East Midlands.

We provide information and advice on choosing renewable energy systems to ensure that consumers, developers and decision makers can make well informed choices. Our technology pages are put together following extensive market and technology research.

NEP coordinates and are involved in a number of projects which focus on renewable energy.  These projects aim to encourage the take up of renewable energy in both public and private sectors.

There are important questions that any person buying an expensive piece of energy saving or energy harvesting technology needs to ask. To understand installers and manufacturers answers you need to know a little about the technology.

  • How does it work?
  • How much does it cost?
  • How much energy does it actually generate or save?
  • How does this technology or product compare with traditional or other similar technologies or products?
  • Will it pay for its self and over how long?
  • Can I get funding or tax breaks for this technology?
  • Will it be difficult to install and run?

NEP has produced several factsheets that provide answers to these questions.

Some renewable energy or energy saving technologies require a significant capital investment, usually this investment will pay for itself over time.

Buying a suitable renewable energy technology is a bit like paying up front for some of your energy costs. Even if it costs a bit now, over a couple of years you will have saved a great deal of money, and be insulated against future energy cost increases; you may even earn money with some technologies!

Before making any large capital investment to reduce electricity or heating bills it is important to first explore less expensive energy efficiency and insulation measures. The less heating and electricity you need, the smaller the renewable energy system you will need to buy.
