NEP wins Queen’s Award for Sustainable Development

The East Midland’s leading carbon reduction charity, Nottingham Energy Partnership (NEP), has won Britain’s most sought-after business award from Her Majesty the Queen, the Queen’s Awards for Enterprise, in Sustainable Development.

Established in 1965 these awards have stood the test of time, and salute organisations that excel year on year in their field.   There are 3 categories for the Queen’s Award for Enterprise’ International Trade, Innovation and Sustainable Development.   


NEP was instigated by Nottingham City Council in 1997 and became an independent Charity in 2002. From its inception,
NEP has always believed in “action not words”. 

Phil Angus, Manager of NEP said “Although we are very active on
a strategic level, our ultimate goal is to achieve tangible changes
on the ground.  Working with householders, NEP has directly managed £11m+ of energy efficiency investment into the local housing stock over 5 years, and over the same period has
assisted other housing projects with a further investment of
£9m in the last couple of years”. 


Affordable Warmth

He added, “these energy efficiency projects help local people to make real savings on their fuel bills. We estimate that our direct work has kept almost £3 million in householder’s pockets each and every year;  great for them and a boost to the local economy”.

Whilst energy prices are rising, food costs and other living costs are also climbing. NEP works hard to avoid households having to choose between heating and eating. 

Partnership working is central to NEP’s success.   In 2011, NEP managed the East Midland’s first mix tenure solid wall insulation scheme in Aspley, a large estate in Nottingham. The project, known as Aspley Super Warm Zone, was run in conjunction with Nottingham City Homes.  Private household’s received £8,000 worth of energy saving measures for just over a £1,000 of their own financial contribution  – the core measure was solid wall insulation.   To enable poorer households to join the scheme, NEP established their Green Loans concept with the local Credit Union, which allowed over 30% of the residents to access ‘zero interest’ loans.

They have also completed over 1000 Green Deal assessments as part the Nottingham City Council’s latest ECO scheme in Clifton, Nottingham, and managed the collection of over £1m in householder contributions within 3 months.

NEP has also trained 2,500 ‘front line’ staff in the links between fuel poverty and poor health and the solutions.

Sustainability Services for Organisations and Business

But NEP’s success is not limited to people’s homes. NEP provides an ever increasing range of services to organisations within the public and commercial sectors.

NEP has an award-winning specialism in carbon reduction in Healthcare organisations and has worked with the majority of Trusts across the region. NEP currently has contracts with 4 Clinical Commissioning Groups to work on carbon reduction and resource efficiency to reduce their use of energy, water and materials.

Services also include a major Environmental Management System project for SMEs, ‘Investors in the Environment’. This project, launched in October, awards SMEs with ‘Investors in the Environment’ status so that they can become more resource efficient, be recognised for their achievements and demonstrate their credentials – very useful for environmental requirements within tenders, and increasingly recognised as a simpler alternative to the complex ISO 14001.

NEP also provides Energy Audits and Energy Performance Certificate surveys.

Standards and Performance

NEP consists of a Charity along with a social enterprise Trading Arm. The Trading Arm churns any profit back into Charitable projects, with no profits taken out of the business to pay shareholders or investors. Profit is therefore not the imperative of the company.

NEP leads by example and has achieved ISO14001, ISO9001 and the Investors in the Environment (iiE) all within the last year. We are also an accredited  Green Deal Assessor Organisation and are able to advise customers on various technologies and issue Green Deal assessments and EPCs.   

NEP has grown rapidly 4 years in a row, from £1m turnover to £4m turnover by March 2013.
