6. Waste management
NEP has already supported 2 NHS trusts in achieving recycling rates of over 85%, some of the highest in the UK.
Landfill tax costs are rising as UK landfill capacity is falling. The new revised Waste Framework Directive requires that from 28th Sept 2011 all waste producers to assess their waste options against the waste hierarchy. For clinical waste from 1stJuly 2011 pre acceptance audits are now required before waste can be accepted for incineration or alternative treatment.
After legal compliance, managing wastes in the most cost effective and least environmentally damaging way can be as simple as reducing your bin sizes or switching waste contractor to one that offers offsite material reclaim. Up to 70% of material placed in clinical waste bins could be diverted to recycling or deep landfill as offensive waste; this is a huge unnecessary cost.
Landfill is also one of the most environmentally damaging methods of waste disposal with landfill gas emissions a significant contributor to climate change. After minimisation and reuse, high recycling rates can also actually credit against your carbon footprint.
We can conduct site pre-acceptance audits or organisational waste surveys and analysis, to help you develop an efficient cost saving waste management strategy. We can support you to meet legislative requirements and reduce your environmental impacts. We can provide staff engagement and training, waste benchmarking and analysis or help you choose a waste provider to support your aims.
