Last October NEP won Eon funding to manage a Warm Home Service that develops 15 young people into qualified Domestic Energy Assessors. Their main role is to sign vulnerable residents up to the Warm Home Discount, a £130 reduction off a household’s yearly electricity bill, a replacement of the old ‘Social Tariff’.
Whilst they check resident’s eligibility for the discount, they also conduct a full home energy assessment that provides energy advice and access to practical energy improvements like free home insulation. The whole service can help reduce a household’s energy bill by hundreds of pounds.
Collectively the apprentices have delivered 839 energy assessments across Nottingham helping to keep thousands of pounds in resident’s pockets every year.
In between assessments and training they have also utilised their creative skills by writing and recording a radio jingle for Kemet FM, co-designed project leaflets and flyers and produced artwork for energy events.
NEP’s Emily Clarke, manager of the scheme has been very impressed at the rate in which the apprentices have progressed “I have seen a real transformation, their self confidence has grown and their knowledge of home energy efficiency has developed. All of them have qualified as Home Energy Assessors with a wealth of knowledge and practical green sector skills behind them. Eon has also recognised their potential with several of them securing interviews for Eon Green Deal Energy Assessors”.
Nottingham was one of just five cities chosen by Eon to deliver this apprentice scheme. We will keep you up to date with their progress.
