Press Release: Nottingham Climate Change charity shortlisted for national solar award

26 September 2016

Queen’s award winning climate change charity Nottingham Energy Partnership has caught the attention of the national Solar Power Portal & Clean Energy Awards 2016 for their groundbreaking solar battery storage project, SunGain Battery Bank.

To finance this project NEP successfully secured funding from National Energy Action’s Technical Innovation Fund, a £26.2 million pound UK-wide programme. This project will be up against competitors in the ‘Residential Energy Management Project’ category.

Solar battery technology helps households with existing solar panels utilise up to 30% more of their free green solar generated electricity in the evenings to power kitchen appliances, lights and the television. The battery itself is the same size as a briefcase.

NEP and Nottingham renewable installer T4 Sustainability installed one of three
money saving systems (Victron, Powerflow and Maslow) into 35 low income homes.

Mr Soobratty received one of the free battery storage systems:

“This is a fantastic idea, my friend paid for a (battery storage) system last
year. We are very lucky to be getting it for free and to have the project here
in Essex.
It’s been no hassle and I’ll be saving money – it’s win win for me!”

Data from these systems will be monitored by NEA for the next 14 months.

With little or no subsidies in domestic renewable systems, battery storage is the next big thing and this project will help to bring the technology to the forefront and demonstrate its benefits.  The conditions of this project stated that it must be delivered in Essex; however NEP is now using their new skills and contacts to develop a battery storage project for Nottingham.

Solar Power Portal & Clean Energy Awards 2016 will take place on October
5th at The Hilton Metropole in Birmingham.
